The Story Behind The Justin Slade Youth Foundation

The Justin Slade Youth Foundation exists because one young man's life left a lasting impact on those around him. What began as a community's response to loss has grown into an organization dedicated to supporting, empowering, and connecting youth throughout the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

A Legacy Born from Love

The Justin Slade Youth Foundation was born from unimaginable loss and an unwavering commitment to creating something meaningful in Justin's memory. Following the tragic death of 21-year-old Justin Slade in November 2004, his family and community were left grieving the loss of a young man whose energy, compassion, and love for life touched everyone who knew him.

In the midst of their grief, Justin's parents made a remarkable decision. Rather than creating something that was simply about Justin, they chose to build something because of him—a living legacy that would carry forward the qualities that made him so special. At Justin's funeral, friends, family, and community members contributed over $10,000 in donations, planting the first seeds of what would become the Justin Slade Youth Foundation.

Growing A Legacy

More than two decades later, that legacy continues to grow. What began as a dream inspired by one young man's life has become a vital source of support, belonging, and opportunity for thousands of youth.

Through free programs, mentorship, outreach, recreation, leadership development, and safe spaces where young people are accepted for who they are, the Foundation has welcomed more than 20,000 youth visits and continues to impact hundreds of young people each year.

Every program offered, every connection made, and every young person supported is a reflection of the legacy Justin left behind—a legacy built on compassion, community, and the belief that every youth deserves to feel valued.
